For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonards Essential Elements book, as well a basic understanding of music. Once the student has progressed to have a nice grasp of the fundamentals of music, I usually begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. I believe that the best results will always come when students truly love what they are doing. Therefore, it is important to me to make sure that the class is enjoyable. I encourage students to set goals for themselves on what they need to accomplish at each lesson. Lastly, praise and acknowledgement must be given as much as possible. I am a very big proponent of adaptable teaching, specifically adjusting to the students, wants, needs and goals. I love teaching students what THEY want to learn, and applying my knowledge of music theory and instrument theory in a fun and applicable way to their interests, thereby making music theory less of a snore and chore, while also getting the students excited for more. I love highlighting students excellence and seeing the joy of finally nailing something they've practiced, but even more so I love working through aspects that are particularly challenging for a student, as the reward is even greater after doing so.
