I worked as an adjunct voice professor for 5 years at Texas Southern University (TSU) before joining Houston Baptist University (HBU) as a full-time voice faculty in 2017. At HBU, my job duties extensively include: teaching individual voice students as well as lecturing group classes daily, advising students, teaching masterclasses; creating programs; directing various concerts weekly, and collaborating with both local and international artists and organizations. For beginning students (regardless of age instrument) I try to simplify the approach and work on a set of warm ups/exercises coupled with a performance piece or song that they can feel good about and lots of fun listening assignments. From there I have a few options of instruction methods that I tailor to the individual student. More intermediate/advanced students will not escape from some of the basics (metronome, scales, rudiments etc.) but will be met with many more choices of performance material based more on their individual goals. Method or style technique used will always depend on the preference and requirements of the student. It will also depend on the style of music. For example, classical guitar requires perfection of technique for good execution. This requires practice of scales, arpeggios and such. However, if the student is older and just wants to be able to strum a few chords then that requires a different approach where we focus on simple technique and work on things like rhythm or posture etc. Read More

I love giving my students the option to expess themselves and approach them with the methods they enjoy and desire. Piano students: I usually use the Piano Adventures method, as I find it very methodical and balanced. In each class we do exercises to improve technique, sightreading, and performance along with music theory exercises. In a second part of the lesson we work on the songs having as main goal the creation of a repertoire that the student can play later to family and friends.
