Everything I share with students, I get them to apply it directly in the songs they love, which not only shows them how things work musically, but also keeps them excited and motivated about learning music. Fronting my own band for 20 years, writing/arranging songs, and performing them all over the world has given me the insight into applying music concepts into real songs, and real musical situations.
