Depending on the individual student's technical ability and style of music they wish to learn, I write practice exercises specifically catered to them. With piano students I enjoy using John Thompson and Alfred methods for beginners and I choose different songs as students get more experience. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance.
