I’ve held a variety of teaching and leadership roles, including positions with Portland Youth Philharmonic, the Metropolitan Youth Symphony, Music Workshop, Oregon Bravo Youth Orchestras, Ventura Harmony Project, and public school districts in California and Oregon. In 4th grade I got a recorder and from then on I've soaked up all the music experiences around me. I fondly remember my first solo performance was 5th grade, and my first honor band was that summer. By my senior year of high school I had been involved in a couple dozen honor bands/choirs/orchestras including an amazing tour of Europe in a 200 person band! As far as methods, I do not believe that there is one system that will work for every student, and so I try to find the right combination for each individual.  For piano students I begin with a combination of Alfred and Faber method books, and also teach different scales for technique.  For voice students I try to pick a combination of vocal exercises, classical music and contemporary music based on the student’s unique voice.  Students learn best from music they are passionate about.  What is most important is finding the right songs for each person. Simple breathing techniques, Hal Leonard's Vocal Warmups, is a good book I use for beginners levelsand other techniques will be taught to my beginners. We will discuss each student's goals and what they hope to accomplish in their classes. I will ask each student to sing a couple of notes and songs that I have prepared in order to assess their vocal range (alto, soprano, etc.). With the song of your choice, we will go over tone, vowel placements, translations, and performance enhancers (supporting additional sound, staging, etc.) to make the song your own and better than you have performed before.
