I do my best to be a relaxed, grounded teacher who reminds the student to relax and enjoy the process of making music. I do listening exercises, clapping, counting, reciting the letters of the notes with their voice, and demonstrate the songs they are learning to each student. Before earning my bachelor's degree in K-12 Music Education in 2020, I held a longtime position as a tenor vocalist and choral leader with First Christian Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and post-degree as a K-12 music teacher in dual-language immersion public schools and technology-focused charter schools in the Twin Cities metropolitan area. I like each student to have about 3-5 songs at a time to work on in lessons. It is important to me that the student has a variety of songs to work on so that they do not get burnt out or bored. If a student has a particular goal or song they would like to work on, then I would of course alter any lesson to focus on the need of the student. Read More

Firstly, I believe that laughter is important. It helps students relax and enjoy themselves, and it perfectly engages the muscles needed for support. I try to maintain a teaching atmosphere where laughter is possible. I also believe that the student essentially teaches themselves to sing- I diagnose and provide input. I can take a more hands on approach for less experienced singers, but ultimately, nothing is going to stick if the student is not consiously engaged. Since then, I’ve continued teaching in both private and group settings, always finding deep fulfillment in helping students grow. I’ve held a variety of teaching and leadership roles, including positions with Portland Youth Philharmonic, the Metropolitan Youth Symphony, Music Workshop, Oregon Bravo Youth Orchestras, Ventura Harmony Project, and public school districts in California and Oregon. I’m also trained and licensed as a behavioral therapist for children with autism and have contributed to educational psychology research—work that deeply informs my student-centered, empathetic approach to music education.
