During our lessons we will address correct breathing and posture and different vocalises that will strengthen and free up the voice, giving the student more power, more range and more freedom/agility.  Singing with freedom is a different path for each singer, and I will prescribe different exercises for each area of the voice we are trying to improve.  You will also be assigned songs: some classical, some musical theater and then whatever genre is your favorite. My musical experiences started at church in the 80's when I discovered that I could sing really high notes imitating Christian artists like Sandy Patty and the late puertorican soprano Yolanda Vadiz. Those experiences motivated me to consider studying music seriously not just like another hobby. I started studying voice techniques at the age of 20 at the Sacred Music Institute in the Methodist Church in Hato Rey, PR. A positive teaching environment is vital to encourage a student's progress. Lessons should also be fun. If the student is not having fun then something is not right. For beginning piano students I typically start with Faber's piano adventure series--I typically have students work through the lesson, performance, and theory books while providing them with additional repertoire on the side (pop, disney, classical pieces etc.) For voice students, I typically spend about a third of the lesson working on technique--proper breathing, posture, extending range, working on tone quality etc. Then the rest of the lesson is spent working on solo song repertoire.
