Not every person is going to become a musician, as we all have our own passions and dreams. I want my students to find joy, acceptance, and relief from music, not dread and loathing. I like to ask questions such as "How did playing this passage make you feel? or "What is this piece of music mean to you?" Every piece of music elicits some response from us, and I fully believe that recognition and further development of that response can change the way we perceive music. Read More

The least methodical of the four approaches, the Orff method teaches music in four stages: imitation, exploration, improvisation, and composition, and this is what i use. 1- make musical instruments with your children......2-Sing to them...... 3- Teach them to whistle...... 4- play musical games..... 5- play music in the background.... 6- let them play with instruments...... 7- Give them musical colouring in..... 8- get them used to musical terms... 9- soundtrack nap time.... 10- Children's TV programs. I work very closely with every student customizing lesson plans based on their needs. From the very first lesson, we figure out his/her goals and we write them down. Then I create a lesson plan specifically suited to get them to where they want to be. I often recommend specific songs or artists they should listen to as well as certain books and practice exercises that gravitate towards reaching their goal and most importantly; true potential. While receiving my masters degree in Vocal Performance at the University of Kentucky I became a teacher at a youth arts academy, Academy for Creative Excellence. I never envisioned myself as a voice teacher, but as I grew to know my students and see the impact of the arts on their young lives it has become a true passion of mine.Since discovering my love for teaching voice, I myself have sung more musical theatre as it is the most popular genre I teach. For beginning musicians, I like to start with the very fundamentals of music theory in order to get them comfortable with reading music and understanding what they are doing. Books I have used in the past include the Essential Elements series and the Melodious and Progressive Etude series. I also understand the importance of enjoying what one is playing, so I always urge students find pieces or books for themselves that they are interested in, and incorporate them into my lessons. My lessons are about technique and applying the technique to repertoire. I spend about a third of the lesson on specific technique work and I always encourage students to bring in their own material that we can work on as well. I of course always have songs to suggest and I cater to each individual student's needs. If you need a high song, I'll find a high one. If you need a pop song, I'll find a pop song. Read More
