My teaching style focuses on what most interests the student and draws them to the particular instrument. We explore different song styles and different exercises that speak to each individual student. I also believe in regularly providing constructive criticism and encouragement for each student's accomplishments. The more you inspire your student, the more driven they become. I teach speech skills acquisition from a kinesthetic and descriptive basis rather than an arbitrary linguistic standard, in order to respect the individual and focus on what is fundamentally useful to the artistic process— “the ability to adapt”. My role is to add to a student's repertoire of skills, not to diminish the student's sense of what is appropriate or possible on stage. By explicitly addressing both the objective facts of vocal production and the subjective nature of vocal experience in my teaching, I help the students to free themselves to learn in a way that suits the individual situation. My teaching experience dates back from high school days teaching church, college, university choirs, and eventually soloists or ensemble group. I have had groups who become champions in multiple competitions, I have had students who became queens of jazz vocal competitions, I have students who eventually became professional musicians and vocal artists, and I coach too while they are in a recording studio especially with first timers. A twelve-year-old student who wants to write songs, and sing Taylor Swift, will need a very different approach than a fifty-year-old opera singer.
