  Music lessons will certainly broaden the students knowledge of music.  It has been proven through scientific study that the study of music will improve the individuals cognitive ability and aids in brain development.  Children who study music develop higher math and problem solving skills.    Age is not a factor as we are never to old to learn.  My students range in age from 5 years old to well into their 70’s, many of whom simply want to improve their skills or recapture the joy of making music.  The study and enjoyment of music can and often becomes a life long adventure whether its just for fun or as a career. For piano ages 7-12: I typically start with Primer Piano Adventures or Level 1. I also use Keith Snell Scale Skill Levels for skill and chord practices which is helpful for all kinds of music! Most of the students I've taught have had a background in music through singing in choirs, etc. Other students have had a limited musical background. At whatever the ability level or background, I always try to introduce appropriate solo repertoire to which the student can relate, as well as introducing songs that will aid in teaching proper vocal technique and proper diction.
