For all of my students, I like to begin by teaching correct "warm-up" methods. It is important to learn how to "warm-up" correctly so as not to hurt your voice. Each lesson is tailored to the student's unique interests and goals are set each week to help them accomplish based on those interests. For beginning students I typically start them off with a very simple method of repetition and mirror working first with one hand on the instrument then progressing to fret work. The fundamentals may seem tedious but they are necessary to reach a basic playing level in a short amount of time. I always begin a lesson with having the student play a song/piece of their choice, so that they can feel confident and comfortable in their own skin and in the lesson space. For wind instruments, long tones and scales will occur at the beginning of the lesson, and will be followed by study of an etude and/or piece of repertoire. I will ask the student to sing through the piece, so that the student can make a connection with their own voice and with the music, followed by the student reading through the piece with their instrument.
