For beginning students, we start with simple scales, fingering patterns, short melodies, and based on that student’s needs and learning style, I decide which lesson plan to use (Suzuki, Hal Leonard, etc.). I use Tonal Harmony textbook excerpts to help with advanced theory lessons. More advanced singers receive more training in classical and musical theater technique. Practice is essential to growth, but if a student does not enjoy their repertoire, they simply won't practice. Therefore, I work to find common ground with students when selecting songs. I will not force Classical or Jazz, but feel the technique these styles teach are invaluable. Each student will learn music fundamentals and basic reading skills.
