I mainly use my own performing experience as a method to teach. I developed my own style throughout the years of performing...what works and what doesn't. But its all about experimenting, and getting out of the box. As a jazz singer, it's all about this. But I have studied classical and opera in college, so I have the knowlege of proper singing techniques, breathing techniques, etc. So with the combination of vocal experiences, there is a time and place for each type of singing, and I will pass that along to my students. I think it's important to be kind but firm. It helps to create clear expectations that allow for a student to be most successful. With private lessons, it is important to tailor the sessions for each student individually. Some students require to a "push" while others might want a more relaxed lesson. I would ask for the student to prepare a song of their choice and we would typically spend a few lessons learning the fundamentals and engaging in proper technique. I became section leader for Soprano section. That job required me to perfect each individuals tone so that we blended well as a choir. I began tutoring voice major on repertoire and harmonics.
