For voice I create my own custon lesson plans and use a variety of materials. Students will work on a great variety of repetorie from pop to renaissance. Students are encourgaed to learn to read music, with a great emphasis placed upon practical music theory. I aim to develop intellegent musical artists, foscuing upon intrepretation, critical thinking, historical considerations and creativity. I always focus on proper and healthy singing technique, therefore, for every student, I start with physical and vocal warm up in order to develop fundamental skills of breathing and support. Then I move on to songs or arias (classical or pop), adjusting good vowels and body tensions to improve resonance and efficiency in singing. In college, I began teaching private lessons to students of varying ages and abilities, as well as leading advanced ensembles made up of college-level musicians. I move at a very quick pace, but I have my students set their own goals. While I will select the literature for the student, I want them to feel successful when they are working with me. I want students to be confident and successful, so I will do anything in my power to help them learn good technique and practice habits. When it comes to teaching voice, there is no one way of doing so. Each child learns differently and each child has a different instrument, and it is most important that that be figured out first. I will generally start out with well known songs sung by ear, and then depending on the students level help them to learn to read music. I like to create very clear imagery that builds over time. The voice is not something we can see or touch, so I often joke that singing is about learning Jedi mind tricks that help us achieve a healthy technique. I like to incorporate theory/musicianship and some piano into my lessons to create a well rounded understanding of singing as a musician.
