While the technique is the same, the approach can be very different for each student. I first work on breath, then warm up the voice with exercices and then we sing and have fun. I accompany my students on the piano and encourage them to perform at recitals if they feel up for it. Music is my life! I'm currently finishing up my Bachelors of Music in Vocal Performance at Portland State, and teaching music in the Portland community. I am also very fortunate to be an active performer. I've sung lead and supporting roles in many musicals and operas, and am thrilled to be a part of the internationally renowned Portland State Chamber Choir. We have fun right out of the gate. I bring songs to work on that I think students will like, and invite them to tell me what music they love so that they will want to practice. I have a few books to help us work through technique, but try to use that technique in music that the student will be excited to practice.
