I like having my students take advantage of any school/local recital opportunities that might arise as it provides great experience. My students get to choose some of their repertoire and lesson content as it makes it more enjoyable for them. I do require all students to play scales as they provide an essential foundation for all that they will play. I even had the opportunity to sing in Carnegie Hall and Radio City. I spent two years as a show choir director while in college. I like to send students home with one challenge every week, and a larger challenge for every month. Success feels good for any student, and short term goals that tie in to long term goals are a good way to keep feeling inspired and developing a drive to succeed.
