In 2006, I graduated from The Peabody Consveratory of Music with a Bachelor of Music Degree in Vocal Performance. Performing all over the world to include the U.S. and Europe has been one of the greater experiences of my life as a musician. Some of my career highlights include the many recitals I have crafted and performed with musical colleagues, singing in a NY opera program called American Singers' Opera Project, my debut at Carnegie Hall in 2012 and all those wordelss moments of connecting with an audience during songs. About the time I started a family, I consolidated my teaching, opening a home studio while maintaining my position at the boarding school. Since 2006 I have taught every year in a summer arts program for gifted and talented youth, only taking off the summer of 2013 while on maternity leave. While I do recommend my beginning students start with a classical foundation, I also teach a variety of contemporary commercial music (CCM) styles including pop, Music Theatre, and country, among others. I teach a relaxed, free style. I want my students to feel comfortable to move around the room. Our work in the studio is experimental. I am happy with whatever progress we make each week, as long as there is some progression. I particularly emphasize this point with my youngest voice students. All progression is a victory. Coming from an education background, I have several diverse experiences which qualify me to teach music. In college I majored in music education and developed tools to introduce beginners, both children and older amateurs, to music. I student taught students K-12 in choir, piano, theater, and general music. Music is deeply personal; one must get to know each student's own personality, interests, and connections to music. Early on (both in the teaching relationship and in each lesson) one must assess where the student is, as to technical and musical growth, and with the music at hand. Then one finds, models, explains and encourages the next steps the student can achieve. Clear guidance and dialogue about what will happen outside the studio (listening, practice, rehearsal, performance) helps turn the weekly cycle of lessons into an upward spiral of progress, achievement, and reward.
