For my piano students, I use different method and technique books in order to help my students learn the basics.  This includes how to properly read their sheet music so that they can pratice their skills by themselves.  I also use repetition and demonstrate different pratice skills so that my students can further advance their piano skills. I also use composition to help students develop ownership of the skills they're acquiring. Nothing says "I know how to do this" like writing your own song.
