My experience goes back to High School when I would give casual tutoring sessions to friends. In college I started teaching lessons in theory and composing/songwriting. I like to encourage students to get on a practicing schedule especially for younger students as it helps them get more interested in the instrument. I have access to every jazz real book, and have many different lead sheets to tunes that aren't even included in them. I also have access to many different musical theatre books for all different voice types. I prefer to do half-hour lessons for beginners and young musicians. After more lessons can be prepared, forty-five minute or hour long lessons are more appropriate. For trumpet students, I rely heavily on the Arban method for the essentials and then add other materials depending on the student's goals.
