During our lessons we will address correct breathing and posture and different vocalises that will strengthen and free up the voice, giving the student more power, more range and more freedom/agility. Singing with freedom is a different path for each singer, and I will prescribe different exercises for each area of the voice we are trying to improve. You will also be assigned songs: some classical, some musical theater and then whatever genre is your favorite. Read More

I take a physiological approach to singing...after all it is a physical endeavor. The voice or larynx, despite all it complexities, is just another set of muscles that can be trained to reach its fullest potential. The method I teach, “The Franco/Italian Bel Canto Method” has been taught in Europe for more than 200 years and has produced the world’s greatest classical singers. Now, having said that let me assure you that studying this method doesn’t mean you have to become a classical singer. The techniques used are designed to strengthen and improve the quality of the human voice and can be applied to any genre whether your goal is “Broadway,” “American Idol” or you simply want to improve your voice for your own personal satisfaction. The method also addresses all things associated with singing, such as breathing, posture and stage presence. Read More

For beginners, I will start lessons by assisting them to become familiar with their instrument and to learn all the names of the various parts of the instrument. All lessons will be catered to what it is that the student is excited to explore, be it music theory, instrumental techniques, improvisation, composition, arrangement, ear training, transcription, reading, playing in a group setting, or just learning a favorite song. In terms of lessons material, I will guide students when and where necessary and do have traditional modalities of approaching lessons that I will employ if I feel the student is lacking direction (i.e. Read More

I usually see what level the student is on and we go from there. The age and interest of the students will also tell me which way to go in the lesson. Usually with beginner students the Hal Leonard book is a good place to start but I'm willing to start with any beginning book. If the students are just interested in one specific thing then we focus on that. Read More

My main goal and teaching is to inspire self motivation and make it fun! I like to pick songs that are fun to play and challenging at the same time depending on what level you are at that time. By doing this I think keeping the instrument out and not in the closet is a good start that way if the inspiration hits you and you want to play it is within your reach "guitar stand and wall hangers are ideal" and not in the case the put away " Out of sight out of mind" I suggest buying a music stand for your instruments and or wall hangers which seem to work very well as a display and also so the instrument is within your reach. Most of the students I've taught have had a background in music through singing in choirs, etc. Other students have had a limited musical background. At whatever the ability level or background, I always try to introduce appropriate solo repertoire to which the student can relate, as well as introducing songs that will aid in teaching proper vocal technique and proper diction. If the student needs additional training in music theory, I gladly incorporate that into the lesson. Read More

Nothing is more rewarding than seeing a student gain confidence in their voice. Singing can be very scary especially at first, but it is my passion to be a cheerleader of the singer. Singing is mostly a mental game, and my passion is to fight that one first. One can have all the technique in the world, but if they don't have confidence, musicality is thrown out the window. So, I primarily focus on giving the student a safe place to make mistakes grow and learn and feel comfortable to explore. Read More
