A typical lesson for me usually begins with whatever warm-ups and exercises I feel fit our goals, and a check in to see how you're doing and if there is anything in particular you want to focus on improving. For guitar and bass there are various Hal Leonard books that work well; one thing that I try to do with guitar and bass students is encourage them to know what note they are playing and to eventually read music notation if they are curious and interested in it. I believe it is important to build a strong technical foundation and knowledge of the mechanics of the voice, while also focusing on performance and real-world musicianship. With contemporary music theory (beginning to advanced) integrated into each lesson, students learn to understand and apply a musical vocabulary that is necessary to communicate in the industry. As a vocalist myself, I think too often singers have trouble communicating with their bands in a rehearsal setting or with producers and engineers in a recording setting; therefor I see the benefit in students being able to identify the grooves and "feels" of their selected pieces as well as being able to count-in a band. I encourage students to be open and ask questions during their lessons. I want to get a clear picture of every student's learning style and interests to help them achieve their goals. I also encourage students to participate in bi-annual recitals which I put on in partnership with other music teachers in Santa Clarita, as performance is an excellent motivator for practice and consistency with lessons.
