Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument. I've also found that a combination of classical and modern music can go a long way in helping students enjoy the piano and motivate them to practice and continue to learn. If a student isn't having fun in their lessons, then I'm not doing my job! Read More

The most important thing is that the student should be having fun, because music is fun! There is work involved, but at the end of the day, music should bring a smile to your face and if you are not having fun with music, then I am not doing my job. It is extremely important to me that the student grows, not only in technical ability, but in their love and enjoyment of music as well. Read More

Students will be encouraged to bring in pieces that they are interested in learning. For voice students, I will require them to not only learn theory, but they will be required to study piano for a short period of their lesson. This is meant to help boost their understanding of musicality, theory, and aural training. We will also begin with simple vocalizes that are catered to their style of singing. Read More

I mainly use my own performing experience as a method to teach. I developed my own style throughout the years of performing...what works and what doesn't. But its all about experimenting, and getting out of the box. As a jazz singer, it's all about this. But I have studied classical and opera in college, so I have the knowlege of proper singing techniques, breathing techniques, etc. So with the combination of vocal experiences, there is a time and place for each type of singing, and I will pass that along to my students. For a beginning student on guitar, I have them learning notes from a Hal Leonard, Mel Bay, or Alfred starter book. All these books are great, but I believe it depends on the individual student and how they learn. I also teach tab to beginners. I feel it is important to read tabs these days as well as notes. I also work with music theory. It is also important to know what you are doing, not just putting your fingers on the strings. Read More
