Since I mainly work with teenagers and adults, I like to start with Alfred's Adult's Piano Courses. I like to find music that the student is interested in and to put together solo repertoire that they enjoy playing. This can be anything from classical music to the Beatles, Jazz Standards or pop tunes. I also encourage my students to write, to record themselves and play for others. If they are aspiring songwriters, we work on their material, as well as learning songs by their favourite musicians and specific songwriting exercises, which include rhythm, melody, harmony and lyrics. While enjoying all school music activities I was selected to join in honor county and state orchestras and choirs. In junior high and high school I was selected to play for the Junior Pacific Symphony Orchestra, received scholarships to music summer camps, and was selected musician of the year. For beginning piano students, I begin by assigning Bastien's Piano Books; for children, I usually start with the Basics Primer, and for adults the Piano for Adults. I am new to teaching but I have worked as an organizer and choir leader in my high school and college, giving me the experience I need to have an organized curriculum for new students that is interesting and actually impactful. I aim to teach younger beginner guitarists how to best pick up the instrument and learn by playing the songs that they actually like!
