My approach/style to teaching is quite straight forward. My first question is often how long has the student been studying. Does he/she play another instrument? What kind of music would they like to learn? Are they taking lessons for pleasure? If they are beginners or at an intermediate level; are they taking lessons to become professional singers? But once this stage is mastered, things become much simpler. I start off lessons slowly with simple technical studies where the student can focus specifically on technique to efficiently and confidently. To help support this stage I typically introduce basic note reading skills to acquaint the students with musical notation while introducing them to playing in time. For guitar (beginners), I use Mel Bay's Modern Guitar book. For vocalists interested in jazz, I'll use The Real Vocal Book for material, and to teach out of, I'll use my beginner piano and guitar books for sight reading, and teach my own techniques from memory.
