Sometimes I will make audio recordings of a student to track progress. For a student to sit and really listen to the improvemnets they have made I find to be one of my best teaching tools. My lessons for vocalists are divided into two sections: technique and repertoire. For singers, breath management skills are of primary importance as this directly affects intonation. I like to begin with Anne Peckham's The Contemporary Singer. My students can choose any songs they would like to sing while we work on musicianship skills including expression and lyrical phrasing. I began teaching almost 15 years ago, starting with private lessons, and eventually branching out to singing and handbell choirs, inner-city after school programs, outreach programs for the homeless, and adult continuing learning in Boston, MA.
