At Northwestern, it was my responsibility, on top of earning my degree, to teach lessons to non-music major students. These student came from all backgrounds and experience levels, and their fields of study included math, computer science, drama, and more. Along with my other students, who I've taught privately for years, they all made improvements in performance practice, musicianship, and, of course, their voices. The principles of singing are universal for every voice, and their so simple that adjustments are easy to make based on voice type, experience level, or any other factor. Read More

Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs. Read More

A more exhaustive technique book is "Kitharologous" by R. Iznaola which can be challenging but very effective. Ramirez's technique book hints to the ideas shared by many that flamenco is to guitar technique what jazz is to that of the piano. A natural , easy and sure path to virtuosity of the instrument through it's most popular art form which forms a link to the classical tradition. The practice of jazz and boogie-woogie basses in the left hand is at the heart of piano artistry to strengthen the left hand and prepare to fill in with melodies in the right hand as much as the Rasgueado is in Flamenco to strengthen the extensor muscles of the right hand set the rhythm for the eventual filling in of melodies and falsetas. My teaching style is individualized to meet the needs of the students. I like to use a portion of the first lesson to discuss the goals and musical interest of the student regardless of age. I encourage beginner students to learn basic theory to develop rudimentary skills. I then try to incorporate a student’s favorite music into the lesson plans. I also strongly encourage voice and guitar students to write their own music to promote self expression. Read More

I aim to make each lesson special, tailoring it to what each student needs. It's not just about learning the technical stuff; it's about helping them love music, understand it, and enjoy expressing themselves through it. Teaching, for me, isn't just about lessons. It's like being a guide on a journey. I'm there to help students discover their potential, navigate the ups and downs of making music, and, most importantly, to make sure they enjoy every step of the way. Read More
