I fell in love with teaching and after receiving my Bachelors of Music in Vocal Performance, I began teaching private lessons and directing the commercial vocal ensemble at Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville. With this in mind, my lesson plan focuses primarily on breaking down songs that we want to learn how to play into their fundamental parts; the chords, the grooves, the fills, what-have-you, until we can put it all together. For piano, I use the Faber, Snell, Alfred and Marlais methods to the end of Level 6. These would include a lesson, technique, theory and performance books. Dozen a Day is included along with Czerny and Hanon in later levels. For voice, the younger students use Patterns of Sound, with scales, theory, performance and diaphragm exercise are included. Older students start with the the Liebling lesson book after a scale testing is done to see what range they sing in. Read More

By night, I serve as the Musical Theatre Director at the school, and offer private vocal lessons. For beginning piano students who are children, we will typically either start with Alfred or Piano Adventures series. I find that both these series introduce the concepts of technique, theory, solo playing, and terminology in ways that help them learn effectively. Depending on the age, they will be placed in either early beginner's series or the beginner series. For adults, I look at what they are interested in and build a course for them based on that.
