I do not punish a student for incomplete homework, however I stress that the homework I assign is to help them on their musical journey. For young children I will start with the basics of music. Laying the fondation for years to come. With young children it is important to not overtax the voice and to consider their attention span. These lesson shouldn't last more than a half hour. For beginning students I want to focus on breath, posture, pure vowels and natural consonants. I teach through positive reinforcement and encouragement with a set structure that allows for discipline and certain benchmarks that can determine success and mastery of certain skills. I truly believe that when students are nurtured and given a comfortable space they will excel as creating music and art is vulnerable and requires the student to let go.
