I typically half my lessons between music reading and theory skills and working on their song or songs, and I normally assign a listening example, music reading assingment, and encourage daily practice. I do not punish a student for incomplete homework, however I stress that the homework I assign is to help them on their musical journey. My lessons focus on trouble areas identified during the initial lesson. I would develop a plan of attack setting realistic goals that are both measureable, realistic and obtainable to achieve. A usual model lesson would consist of the following segments: 1. For young children I will start with the basics of music. Laying the fondation for years to come. With young children it is important to not overtax the voice and to consider their attention span. These lesson shouldn't last more than a half hour. For beginning students I want to focus on breath, posture, pure vowels and natural consonants. For adults, I start by finding out if they are adult beginner, or adult intermediate, depending on the knowledge of singing and technique.
