I have been teaching private lessons part time for almost a year. In that short time, my studio has grown to include seven students of varying skill levels. I believe that regular practice is important, and that practicing should be fun. I try to combine classical and modern music when teaching, as both are important to the development of a well rounded musician. I love teaching because I feel as though I learn as much from my students as they do from me, and nothing is more rewarding than helping foster someone else's love for music! Read More

First, thank you so much for stopping by and looking at my profile. I know how hard it is to find a good teacher and I appreciate your consideration. I just moved to the Chicago area in the beginning of 2013 to further my performing career. Curently I sing with Chicago Opera Playhouse and am actively auditioning in the Chicago area. Before moving to Chicago I studied abroad in Weimar Germany with the Lyric Opera Studio Weimar and played Papagena in their production of Die Zauberflte. Read More

I also was luck enough to study under: Dr. Francis McBeth, Dr. Eric Erickson, and Dr. David Holsinger. I privately studied flute under Ms. Sarah Tuck co-principal flautist of the San Diego Symphony Orchestra for two years. My professional career began when I entered into the United States Marine Corps as a flautist. I was stationed at Cherry Point and Camp LeJeune Marine Corps Bands. I served as assistant section leader and then section leader for over five years. Read More

I like to utilize many avenues of teaching and learning music. There are a handful of books I like to use for both beginner and advanced guitarists. The internet is a vast resource that contains just about anything you would want to know! Google and YouTube are great for learning songs, techniques and theory without need for a teacher or even an instrument. For intermediate to advanced players, I have some books, authors, guitarists and Internet personalities I might point to. Read More

In every lesson, I will check in with the student to see how they are progressing and will address any issues that have arisen during their practice sessions. I try very hard to tune into the individual student's learning style and to figure out the best way to communicate my philosophy. I like to start with an example from whatever musical style from which the student wishes to learn and from there I will look to derive a greater understanding of how and why the music works the way that it does. First I try to set goals and learn more about the student (schedules, passions, goals, etc.). Then I focus on the basics. The first lesson almost never results in the ability to play anything because it's so important to avoid practicing with improper technique. First the student must learn hand position, how to support the guitar, how to hold the pick and more before a note can be played. Once the student has grasped the fundamentals I move on to a simple song in the category of music that I know they'd like to focus on. Read More

I believe it's important for beginning guitar players to get a balanced understanding of the guitar, while also taking the time to enjoy the simple milestones. These milestones vary for each student, depending on their personal goals but each stage of the learning curve presents its own unique set of challenges. For many beginners, learning the basic chords and being able to perform their favorite songs is the "ultimate goal" but getting there can lend to serious growing pains... Read More
