I've seen the face of an 80 year old grasping the ukulele and finally getting to hear himself playing his own songs, and seeing the glow in his eyes like a child. When you set realistic goals and set what steps are going to get you there, all the while celebrating each little victory, every lesson depends on the needs of my student. I am currently teaching solely for the fun of it and the challenge in it, as it is not my main career or main project, but it is something I get a lot from, and I have found over the years, has helped a ton of people get back into picking up their instrument, and cutting out the world for a bit. I am a classically trained singer with a Master's Degree in Vocal Performance who lives, performs, and teaches in New Orleans. I frequently perform professionally in several genres of music, including opera, jazz, musical theatre, and pop. I also have several years of experience teaching in all of these genres. I sing with the New Orleans Opera and St. Cecilia's Asylum Chorus, in addition to fronting my jazz band, the Melanie Gardner Quintet, which performs regularly on Frenchmen Street and around the city. I like to create my own lesson plans and materials, though if the student (or their parent) would like a specific method, I would be happy to oblige. For beginner, I start with the fundamentals of reading music: reading note names in different registers, reading rhythms (I like to use the Eastman system for speaking rhythms), and sight-reading skills using movable do solfeggio (all this in a manner that suits the student, whether a child or an adult. I always try to get information about each students favorite kind of music. Music lessons are for learning but for also getting inspired. Each student is different and I always keep that in mind. I always teach at a pace comfortable to the student. My goal for my students to learn at least one new thing every lesson. I also make sure to give my students time to ask questions. Read More

I am an enthusiastic and knowledgeable instructor who loves sharing my love of music with students. In 2011 I graduated from Haverford College as a Music Minor and History Major. I write songs constantly and have performed hundreds of times as both a solo artist and with bands that I have formed. I have performed in Maine, Massachusetts, New York, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, California, North Carolina, Texas and Louisiana. I work every day to become a better singer, songwright, and instrumentalist, and I appreciate working with those who share a similar drive to excel. Read More

For begining students I like to start from a foundational stand point. It is very important to enstill good practice habits and technique in order not to develop bad habits in your playing. For drumming and other instruments, starting with rudiments, learning how to read music, and playing scales are a great way to help a student build their technique and ear up. I think it is really important to ask what kind of music the student is into or show them how the foundational basics can be used in an actual playing situation instead of just a boring regimented routine.
