I always talk to my students about the physical function of the vocal instrument in the first few lessons, especially if the student has not had voice lessons in the past. My goal is to uncover each student's natural voice, as free from strain and technical difficulties as possible. For Piano, I use several method books, including the Thompson Method, Shaum, Alfred, and Bastien. For Guitar I use Hal Leanard, Mel Bay, and several others. I also use interactive software of various kinds. And for Jazz, Blues and Rock improvisation, I use Band in a Box to provide backing tracks for the purpose of practicing improv over chord progressions. Band in a Box allows the student to simulate the experience of playing with a band in various styles and genres, with the possibility of change the chord progression and also changing the key and tempo. I began playing guitar and singing a few years after that and then in 2016 I found a book of jazz standards that I discovered could be played on violin and fell in love again. Drums, violin and guitar are my favorite instruments to play now as well as singing, and I play bass and piano more casually.
