I've seen the face of an 80 year old grasping the ukulele and finally getting to hear himself playing his own songs, and seeing the glow in his eyes like a child. I have been told that I am a very energetic and encouraging teacher - I want my students to succeed and to be happy in their singing! I defintely will not stay seated behind the piano for the entire lesson. I like to get up and get involved! I won't ask students to try anything that I won't demonstrate myself first, which I have found usually puts them at ease (this is especially true with children and teens.) For beginning children students I typically start with Hal Leonard or a similar reputable music book.  Once the students has a grasp of the fundamentals we will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate to their age and skill level.  For adult students, I find out what the student is interested in and create a lesson plan that is fun and challenging no matter their skill level.
