For piano beginners, I generally start with the Faber method books, but I always supplement with other books or pieces that are tailored to the students abilities and interests. There will be short pieces to practice at home which can be mastered in a week or two, and frequently there will be longer challenge pieces that will be worked on for several weeks with the goal of giving the student a piece they will enjoy playing for themselves or for friends and family. It is extremely important that students not only have fun during lessons, but that they also feel challenged. Every lesson is a small step out of the comfort zone - it may or may not be noticed, but the step is take none-the-less. The lessons I teach are inclusive and may include snippets from other subjects - such as history, science, or math. My teaching experience dates back from high school days teaching church, college, university choirs, and eventually soloists or ensemble group. I have had groups who become champions in multiple competitions, I have had students who became queens of jazz vocal competitions, I have students who eventually became professional musicians and vocal artists, and I coach too while they are in a recording studio especially with first timers. My biggest goals for teaching are to provide a student with a comfortable space to be vulnerable, allow them that space to promote learning, and create a plan for students that allows them to achieve their personal goals while growing their love and passion for music. At the end of the day, lessons are work, but music is meant to be enjoyable and something they can be passionate about.
