I've been teaching and leading sectionals for four years now, and have taught lessons on both fiddle and voice! It's an honor to be able to spread the love of music to students, as music has changed my life. Consistent practice is important, but so is finding what the student loves to practice. Music should be fun, even as it's hard work! Students are encouraged to write, explore their own creativity, and explore other avenues of music beyond performance, like learning music theory and notation, as well as the basics of music software, if they're interested. For piano, I like to begin with fundamentals such as five finger exercises and musical literacy teachings to ensure growth of musical understanding as well as proper technique. I have had great success using the Faber and Faber book series, as this gets students in the music quickly. From there, there is so much solo repertoire to explore! For my beginning students who are children, I like to start with Alfred's Music books based on the instrument they choose. They are specific, yet easy for kids to follow along with, and encourage practicing by making each song fun. For adults, we journey into what the student is interested in or inspired by, and then I guide my instruction accordingly to keep our lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. As stated above, I believe that emotion plays an integral role in the mastery and performance of any instrument. Consequently, my teaching style revolves around the use and application of emotion in play. A simple example of this would be a simple discussion of the differences between major and minor chords and the relative emotion conveyed by each, as interpreted by the student. Nothing is more satisfying than seeing students passionately pursue and succeed in the musical goals they set for themselves. I encourage students to set smaller, individual goals that can help them reach the larger goals they may have. Each student is unique and all students deserve to learn in the mode or format that is most effective.
