I have been brought up with the Suzuki method of learning and recently I completed my Suzuki Teacher-Training in books 1-8. I find this method to instill the very best habits in students of all ages. The learning process for a young child is best when a parent is learning with the student. I have taught beginners to advanced beginners, and most of my students have to this point hired me to train for a particular upcoming audition. I introduce scales right away and each student usually has a technique book. I also incorporate games into lessons for young students to keep it fun. As students advance I introduce sheet music and music they like. For adults, there are a couple of chord method books by Alfred and Faber available and I use those unless they request something specific to work on.
