I use classical European etudes and methods, contemporary sheet music, my own teaching etudes, childrens' books with CDs, fiddle books, etc. I have weekly lesson plans that cover warmups, focus points, working pieces, etudes, theory, review and performance preparation, and I keep a copy of each plan for my own review. For beginner students who are children, I typically start with Suzuki violin book. My goal is try to find the balance between fun and progress. I will give them fun book after they learn the fundamentals. After that, I would like to ask and help them to prepare their first performance. I have been teaching for over five years, taking on students as young as 5 and as young as 65. ;) I have taught both privately, in duos, and in larger groups. I started playing the violin when i was 5 years old, I went to Hamilton Country Day School in Attleboro MA as a child where violin was part of the curriculum. I was lucky enough to be the Concert master in the Rhode Island Philharmonic Youth Orchestra in the Prep Strings section when i was 10 years old. I don't have prior experience teaching students, but i have almost 20 years of experience playing, and look forward to sharing what knowledge, and passion for music i have with students of all ages. When i teach a student who is just starting on a string instrument and has never played before i usually start them with the Suzuki books and cds. I find having a cd or recording to listen to and play along with is a great help. Other books i use with beginners in addition to the Suzuki books that have recordings too are Solos For Young Violinists, solos for young violists, and Fiddle Sessions by Charlie Hall, and Bela Bartok's 44 violin duets.
