I like to have a consistent plan for all of my lessons, so that students know what to expect, as well as the best methods for practicing. I always start my students off with a warm-up consisting of scales or a technical exercise that relates to the piece that we are working on. For young children, i would start by showing them Twinkle Twinkle, once the student is able to hold the violin and bow upright without my help, and they understand the basics of violin. For children and adults, i would start with the book A Tune A Day, cause it teaches the basics of playing the violin such as simple scales and arpeggios, and will allow the student to make progress with each song they learn. Also performing in concerts gives them goals to work for so I try to have my students to perform at some assisted living places and more several times a year and the more they perform usually the better they improve. It can be encouraging to see that others make mistakes too and that noone is perfect. I like students to learn how to read as soon as they can, but I honor the suzuki idea that it is good to learn to play the first few pieces by ear so listening does not get lost in learning to read.
