The ultimate goal of my teaching philosophy is to help my students to develop a passion for music and eventually develop their own understanding of music in an artistic form. Every week, I set goals that are individualized for every student. If the goals are not met, we could discuss the situation and adjust accordingly. Students should feel comfort during the lessons and enjoy playing. I also actively listens to feedbacks provided by the students and families and make reasonable changes to the teaching plan. For adolescent beginner piano students I recommend 'John Thompson's Earliest Piano Course'. In this series Books I-III build a strong base upon which a student can specialize in different genre and styles graduating from book III. For adult students beginning I would suggest John Thompon's Adult (or Modern) Piano Course. The pacing of this book is far more accelerated and more in keeping with an adult pace to work with. I have been teaching for more than 30 years, mostly in the public schools as well as privately. I have instructed large groups and ensembles, as well as smaller musical groups in and out of the public schools. Performing in various Jazz groups throughout the state has enhanced my teaching knowledge in the field of music education. My Masters degree in music education has enabled me to develop as a well rounded instrumental music teacher, and also as a flexible individual when it comes to understanding my students' musical needs. I was brought up with the Suzuki method. Therefore, I do use that as my main method to teach. However, since the start of my experience as a teacher, I have learned new methods of teaching. As a result, I am very open to different teaching methods. My preferred method is Suzuki. I also want to know that students are enjoying playing and practicing their instrument. To achieve this, I generally provide duets for students to play with me as well as another piece of music outside of the method we are using. Read More

I began teaching during my time at The University of Akron, and have had the opportunity to work with students at all ages and levels - from young students who are just beginning their musical journey to more advanced students preparing for youth orchestra and music school auditions to older adults who wish to continue improving their skills or pick up new ones! I also served as a Teaching Assistant and worked with collegiate level students in solo work and ensemble preparation. Read More

I love nothing more than to see a student come into or leave their lesson beaming with a sense of pride and self-accomplishment. What that means to a student is as unique as they are. My beginner students may feel overjoyed to have learned their one-octave D major scale played pizzicato, my more experienced students could be proud to announce that they figured out a tricky passage on their own using skills they learned in a lesson. I typically start violinists with the Suzuki method books and I start my piano and guitar students with the Alfred and Essential Elements books. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp on fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first performance. However, if a student isn't learning effectively from the book they were originally given, I either change the method book or compose my own exercises that I think the student would benefit from.
