I will vary my methods based on the individual student. For students between 3 and 7, I will use the Suzuki method, which in my experience is best for students of that age. For beginners after that, I will use method books and repertoire that not only addresses the students technical and musical development at that point in time, but is also fun and enjoyable to play. For all of my students, I let them pick a song (vocal) or piece (violin) that they would like to sing or play. This way I can analyze what level they are on. For my voice students, I start with vocal warm-up exercises of the different vowels. It helps me to understand their range as well as tone of voice. I also make it a goal for the student to learn one major classical piece throughout the course of instruction: "Fur Elise" by Beethoven, or "Moonlight Sonata: 1st Movement" by Beethoven. Depending upon the playing ability of the student, I pick books and methods that teach the fundamentals of reading music and technical exercises. Repertoire is dependent upon the style of music in which they are interested; I teach both Classical and Jazz and they are totally different in content, although the harmony and chord progressions are similar. After each lesson, I wrote down their homework, and if a parent is there, I go over their progress. If it's an adult student, I obviously don't have to do that, but I enjoy all ages, and have students 4-82 currently! I even go to teach my 82 year old student, at her assisted living place! The difference between a kid and an adult student, is usually, that the child notices the correctly notes, while the adult thinks they had to be 7 to learn. Read More
