I started playing violin when I was 7. I've been with Musika since 2011 (while I was in college). I have experience teaching Suzuki method (violin) from young age kids to old students. I also have been teaching Suzuki Method (K-12) strings at a local arts school and also at a Korean community center. I am currently teaching music subject at school as well. I've also found that a combination of classical and modern pop music can go a long way in helping students enjoy the violin and motivate them to practice and continue to learn. Read More

I take the great things about the Suzuki Method and use them (fun, creativity, by-ear learning, group jams). Then I take the things I don't like about the method and disregard them (pre-established repetoire, no composition or improv). I teach kids how to concentrate, how to teach themselves, how to ignore distractions, and the philosophy for joyful performance without nervousness. Beginning violin is important. I use Hal Leonard's Essential Elements to help teach the functionality and basic building blocks of playing the violin. Moving forward, the best introduction into violin music itself is the Suzuki Violin School volume set. Each book helps students through various levels during their beginner phase. These pieces not only serve as educational material but also as solo repertoire for beginners in recitals. For beginning strings students (even young children) to advanced students, I use the Suzuki method along with the accompanying sight reading book, I Can Read Music. Advanced students who have reached Suzuki book 6 and beyond are invited to seek out other repertoire as a supplement to their Suzuki studies. Students who are involved in an orchestra are also invited to bring excerpts of their music to their lessons so that I can help them to feel confident and prepared at playing tests and auditions. For young children (3-9) I exclusively use the Suzuki method and require a lot of parental involvement. I am happy to start children ages 10+ as well as teenagers. Having been a product of a school orchestra myself, I will use a more traditional teaching approach. The adult beginner or adult returner presents unique challenges but I wholeheartedly believe its never too late to start playing an instrument.
