For beginning students who are children, I start with Essential Method Book for Strings. Once the students has progressed more, I use Suzuki Method books, and also, choose (introduce) solo pieces for recital performance. For adults, I find out what the student is interested in and find the book that fits their interest (and guide my instruction accordingly to engage them). For beginning students I always begin with a methods book, I believe that good fundamentals are what makes a good musician, but I also teach ear training methods thereby giving the student the best in both worlds. Once the fundamentals and foundation are efficient, then according to the instrument I move to solo repertoire or experimentation or interpretation. I recently relocated to Ypsilanti, Michigan from Austin, Texas to pursue a Master of Music degree in violin performance at Eastern Michigan University. I hold a Bachelor of Arts degree in violin performance from Huston-Tillotson University and majored in music education at Texas State University. I'm also a native of Midland, Texas. I teach beginning students both by rote and through reading. We use standard Suzuki books for repertoire and method books such as Wohlfahrt, Mazaz, and Sevcik. Very young students begin on Sassmanshaus since it is very engaging as well as well written. However if there is a specific book a student wants to learn from (such as a book from school or a specific style such as country or fiddle) then I am more than willing to teach from that. Read More

This attitude toward teaching helps me to tailor instruction to students' needs rather than following a prescriptive method. I usually begin lessons with a brief, informal conversation where we discuss the student's week and talk about things that are important to them. I create play-along videos, so that kids have something specific to practice at home. I use "Read this First" as a note reading book. Students play along with me and also by themselves at lessons. Eventually kids can gather together and play as a group if they wish to do so. I start with memorization, and easy ways of writing down the songs... and eventually kids will learn to read music, after they've secured a basic technique. Read More
