I am a diverse musician of stringed instruments, specializing in electric and acoustic guitar, violin/fiddle, and mandolin. My genres range from Classical music, classic rock, to Bluegrass, Country, and Blues. On the guitar, I play and teach both flatpick and fingerpicking styles. In classic rock, I teach such recording artists as the Rolling Stones, Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton (Cream), and Neil Young. On the Rolling Stones songs, I teach both standard tuning songs (Ruby Tuesday, Dead Flowers, etc), and open Tunings used by Keith Richards (Brown Sugar-G, Gimme Shelter-E) On the violin/fiddle, and mandolin, I teach, nice baroque pieces like Minuet # 3 in G Mjor (Bach/petzold), Rights of Man (E minor) and later 19th century (Off to California aka Passage in G Major), as well as later classical pieces like Beethoven's 9th Symphony (Ode to Joy). I began playing violin in fifth grade at age 10 and loved it immediately! I continued to play through college, then began my career as a college English professor while raising my family. While teaching at City University of New York (CCNY) I played with the BMCC Downtown Symphony. I find that the key to enjoyable lessons is to discover just the right sort of pieces a student likes to play. No one likes having to practice something they think is boring. It is with this in mind that I also incorporate games and flash cards and activities involving action for the little ones who can't sit long on a piano bench.
