As a violist and violinist I grew up through Suzuki pedagogy and the Barbara Barber books. For beginning students who are young I typically start them using Suzuki also. Once they have progressed and have an understanding for the instrument I will begin to introduce extra pieces outside the Suzuki books that are appropriate for recitals and competitions. I want to figure out what inspires a student. We will hone in on personal goals and use that as a basis for instruction. Motivation is key! I typically use a style of traditional classical instruction. Including scales, studies, and repertoire. I teach sight reading and ear training. I use memorization, and critical listening skills.
