I generally will start off students with the Hal Leonard Essential Elements books 1 and 2. Once the fundamentals from those books have been understood, I will start the students on repertoire that is appropriate for their level. I generally will start off on Classical music, but if the student has a request I will help them work on that song unless I know that their skill level isn't at the point where they can perform that song. Beginner students typically start with Essential Elements. Once the basic fundamentals are grasped, the student will be introduced to repertoire in Suzuki. Intermediate and advanced students will be introduced to solo repertoire that may include concertos, sonatas, and etudes. Scales will be an essential part of practice. My method is to keep students engaged and challenged by setting small goals each lesson for students to accomplish in order to avoid feeling overwhelmed. Read More

Although my formal education is in the sciences, I am a passionate violinist/fiddler who loves sharing my love of music and theater through performance and working with students. I've played violin since the age of four, learning through the Suzuki Method, and continuing through the summers in music camps. During my school years I played viola and cello, and was a member of the Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestra, chamber ensembles, and pit orchestra. Read More

My teaching experience started at age 12 with Alesia Byrd Johnson. I worked with toddlers and as they aged I would continue in their classes while adding the next group of children. Since then I have taught private lessons in homes, studios, private schools, and after graduating from Michigan State University- I taught public school orchestra, band, and choir from Prek-12 in Michigan and then Georgia. I also was in charge of helping students with their Individualized Education Plans, IEP's, in Georgia. Read More

For students interested in studying stringed instruments, I have found that the Suzuki method is a very effective curriculum for young children who cannot yet read well, yet engaging enough for older students if supplemented with note-reading and technique exercises. Hal Leonard's Essential Elements and Robert Frost's All for Strings are two other proven methods that work well for almost any age. Young piano students do very well with Alfred's Basic Piano Course or Faber Piano Adventures methods, and Bastien and Alfred both have methods for adults that seem to promote quick learning. I thrive on my students' success. I am a patient and passionate instructor. However quickly you want to advance is up to you. Lessons are for guidance, but practice is where you will achieve proficiency. I will set clear goals for you based on what you show me you are capable of. As you may have read, I am an advocate of challenges, and it is my goal to keep my students actively engaged with their progressing technique and repertoire. Read More
