ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:
Suzuki Method from the age of 4 years through graduation, private lessons weekly Annual Suzuki Camp, Stevens Point, WI Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestras University of Wisconsin Summer Music Clinic, Orchestra and Chamber Music MPH, Georgia State University, Urban Health; BS, University of Wisconsin, Zoology/Ecology
Overview:
Although my formal education is in the sciences, I am a passionate violinist/fiddler who loves sharing my love of music and theater through performance and working with students. I've played violin since the age of four, learning through the Suzuki Method, and continuing through the summers in music camps. During my school years I played viola and cello, and was a member of the Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestra, chamber ensembles, and pit orchestra. Since graduating, I learned to play Irish and Scottish folk fiddle, and for the last 15 years I have played folk fiddle in various sessions and band combinations.
EXPERIENCE
I have experience teaching all ages, from 5th grade to 55+, and I find it the most rewarding when my students work hard, improve, and achieve their goals. I urge my students to practice regularly on a consistent schedule; improvement is dependent on this, but I also encourage them to explore. I foster learning more about the music and the people who make their favorite music great, and to seek and discover what they can do on/with the instrument. I also encourage joining sessions or chamber orchestras, performing on stage or in recitals, entering competitions, and playing auditions.  Whether classical or folk, for strings class or personal development, I strive to help each student find what motivates and inspires them to want to learn more, and to have fun doing it.
METHODS USED
I teach the basics using a combination of methods, customizing lessons to each student's skill level, ability level, and interest (classical/folk/modern). For beginning students I suggest using the Suzuki Method, or Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once each student is ready to move beyond the fundamentals, I find exercises and solos to best fit and improve their skill level for recital performances, competitions, strings class/orchestra, or other activities. I use various age appropriate interactive activities and teaching aids to help each student learn. Regardless of age, however, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide lessons accordingly to keep students engaged and having fun, no matter what the students' ability level.
LESSON STYLE
I enjoy teaching all ages, and the most rewarding thing about it is when my students show improvement, take initiative to enter into the larger community (through a recital, stage performance, competition, or other activity), and achieve their goals! To inspire this I teach students at his or her own pace. With each lesson, we identify what needs work, work together on the rough spots, and determine what to practice- and how- so as that these things are no longer difficult. I continually identify additional skills for each student to work on, and acknowledge achievements to build confidence and foster desire to learn. When students are motivated to practice, learn, build their skills, and share their knowledge and ability, I know I have done my job. When my students show a passion for the music and a desire to share it, I know I have done my job well.
