Teaching has been a regular part of my life since my undergraduate days. At the University of Idaho, I had the opportunity to be a Learning Assistant for freshman music theory, aural skills, and jazz theory; a position that involved more actual teaching than the typical teaching assistantship. For beginning students I start with an Alfred's beginning drum method to help with reading. We also start on the basic understanding of musical concepts such as tempo, dynamics and so on.  While reading is important I do also include learning by wrote or by ear.  A good ear is just as important as good reading skills for the complete musician.  I always include music that the student is interested in to keep the lessons fun and engaging! I divided my lesson in four parts: Make find your own sound, Technique, HarmonyEar Training, Repertoire. If you are beginner student is a different intensity and difficulty than for a intermediate or advance student, but the approach is the same. I don't care about the lesson in itself, but I care that the student create his/her own musical path. I put a lot of passion in my teaching and I work for the student outside the lesson as well; making specific backing track and exercise for the specific student or helping him/her out for get in a band or to auditioning for music schools. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Alfred piano series books( lesson, solo, theory and technic book) and Elementary method trumpet book, Essential elements.Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. Read More
