For beginning students, I start with a basic method book. Most often, they are enrolled in school band already and I am happy to use whatever method books their teacher uses. Otherwise, I start with the Rubank elementary method for trumpet and cornet. We incorporate music-making (simple songs and tunes) from the very beginning. In the summer of 2022, he served as an artist fellow in the Atlantic Music Festival, giving varied performances in orchestral, chamber and solo settings. To fuse his dedication to performance with his interest in academic research, Tommy also presented a full lecture recital in the recent conference on cultural assimilation in music hosted by the University of Calgary.
