I'm a freelance trumpeter and teacher who loves music and people. I love multiple genres of music and perform professionally in the Seattle area. In addition to classical music and jazz, I also like performing with chamber groups, new music groups, rock groups, and fusion groups. Many of my favorite experiences have come from playing and sharing music. It's more than a hobby to me, it's an obsession! (In a good way)
I've been a musical director of K-8th grade private school .During that time I taught children all aspects of music, as well as preparing them for recitals and competitions. My love of teaching has developed through my professional career.
My teaching experience began at age 16, where I was already teaching multiple instruments (trombone and piano). Although college stifled my ability to teach, I have since graduated and wish to return to it.
My teaching experience varies for each of the instruments I instruct. I began teaching private lessons for guitar in 2004. My voice instruction began in 2009, and the rest of the listed instruments I began to teach in 2012. I believe consistent daily practice is essential for improvement in my students, and encourage my students to log their practice time. In the words of my professor Todd Woodbury, "You do not become a master from what you do within these lessons. You become great by how much effort you put into the application of my guidance through your own practice." I cannot make you the performer you want to be. I can only guide you through the process. This is why I am always excited to bring on a new student. Each student I have worked with holds a special place with me. I strive for those key moments when my student comes to a new musical understanding.
No matter where the student starts from, I always spend a significant amount of time in the first lesson discussing with them what they want to gain, what they are interested in, and how much time and effort they want to put into this endevor. It is important to me to understand the student so that I can cater to their needs and desires, and hopefully encourage them to continue playing music. From there, we will evaluate which books, songs, and styles to teach so that the student will get the most out of each lesson.

Our recommended starting age for the trumpet is 8 or 9. The instrument requires a good amount of lung capacity as well as physical strength in the muscles around the mouth. While a younger student could possibly be physically able to play the instrument, this is somewhat rare.
Taking trumpet lessons is a great way for a child to begin learning music. The trumpet is very portable, so as long as you have a nice sturdy case, it can be transported to and from school and rehearsals with ease. Many students who are studying in a band ensemble in their school program, may also wish to take private lessons to enhance their playing. During lessons students will learn technique, harmony, and rhythm, as well as how to read music.
Pieces of the trumpet are as follows: the rim, the cup, the mouthpiece, the shank, the lead pipe, the valve, and the valve casings. Before purchasing the instrument, be sure the pieces are all in good condition, we suggest asking a music shop professional or expert to verify. Be sure to have a budget in mind, as prices for trumpets can vary widely. The majority of students will rent the instrument before purchasing. Many will choose to bring their own mouthpiece for when they are trying out trumpets.
Adult trumpet lessons will provide technique on the instrument. Students can expect to learn a lot within the first few weeks of lessons. Teachers will encourage students to practice the trumpet every day for the most progress.

Brett is an accomplished musician, who shared his knowledge at a level that my five year old understands. He is polite and relaxed in his mannerisms but take a serious approach to focusing on the lesson. He is very patient and engaging with the attention span you'd expect from a kindergartener. I honestly cannot say enough positive things about Rachel. We met her through CYT where my daughter took theater classes from Rachel and was directed by Rachel in several musicals. Because Rachel was so wonderful to work with and so clearly talented at teaching and directing, several years ago, my daughter started private vocal lesson with her and I have seen my daughter's vocal abilities grow in leaps and bounds. Rachel is an ace at picking music to work on that stretches abilities while at the same time, keeps vocal lessons fun. I highly recommend her as a voice and theater coach.

thank you musika and ed. I never thought of looking for an in-home lesson until I found musika. I have absolutely no hesitation that Ed is beyond capable. He's even offered to meet us at a music store to purchase the correct fitting instrument. how fabulous is that! We've also decided to extend the lesson time from 30 to 45 minutes. All this and just one lesson under our belt. He quickly understood where my daughter is at in level and her style of music. I'm thrilled as can be.

I started taking voice lessons from Ali when I was 19 and a sophomore in college. Though I was hesitant to be starting "late", I felt very comfortable with Ali and her teaching style. We identified several key issues that really made a difference and improved my voice technique. It was fun to sing popular, beautiful songs in our recital! David is not only a great musician and educator but also a delightful human. We began using David six years ago as a piano teacher for my two boys. Since then my eldest moved on to acoustic and electric guitar and my youngest electric and stand up bass. Somewhere along the way I began to take guitar lessons also (I was David's most bearded student at age 48). David always came prepared to lead but also to follow, he often asked what we were listening to and taught us how to play it. His ability to listen to a piece of music and transcribe it always left me amazed, we have several notebooks full of songs we learned individually or played as a group. After a shoulder injury David continued to impress by teaching me music theory instead of our usual lesson. I could go on forever, David made a positive impact on my family and feel fortunate to have met him.
