I use different approaches depending on the type of student I am working with. Let's be honest, everyone is different and learns differently! If I have a beginner, then I usually start with the materials they use in school and branch out from there to some of the standard technical methods like Arban's or Vizzutti's methods. In general, I like to supplement "real" music with etudes and exercises as is necessary. My biggest goal is to help the student grow in a love for music and get the skills to enjoy it to the fullest.

I'm a brass, piano, and guitar instructor based out of Seattle, Washington who loves working with children and young adults to acheive their musical goals. I graduated from Cornish College of the Arts in 2009 where I studied with Trombonist Julian Priester, Pianist Dawn Clement and Bassist Chuck Deardorf. In the past 5 years I have had the honor to tour nationally and internationally as a musician with performances at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, the Fillmore West (S.F) and Sasquatch Music Festival.

I tailor the scope of my lessons to each individual student, based on his or her goals and previous musical experiences. After the first lesson, I create a plan for each student to acheive the goal in mind. I am certified in the Kodaly methodology for music education. While this is primarily a vocal-based methodology, I incorporate principles of this methodology into all of my musical instruction by making musical listening and "inner hearing" an important element of becoming a stronger musician. This has helped me grow into a stronger trumpet player - something I enthusiastically pass on to my students.

My motto is my students create their own lesson. I formulate lesson plans off of the styles of music you are most interested in. If my student has a more "just for fun" attitude, the lesson will inevitably be a more light hearted feel. If the student would like to focus on more technicalities, that as well is a different approach. However, I do have a more structured plan for younger students. This being said, all of my students should expect to learn proper exercises and scales to move along progress. All students will learn basics of music theory as well as musicality. I choose appropriate repertoire and/or allow my students to choose to meet their own goals.  I also drive my students to experiment with improv as well as create their own music.

No matter where the student starts from, I always spend a significant amount of time in the first lesson discussing with them what they want to gain, what they are interested in, and how much time and effort they want to put into this endevor. It is important to me to understand the student so that I can cater to their needs and desires, and hopefully encourage them to continue playing music. From there, we will evaluate which books, songs, and styles to teach so that the student will get the most out of each lesson.
