For beginner students I like to start away from books and notation and work on sound production and call and response. This is a way to get the ear working and to have some fun with potentially the most daunting part of learning an instrument. Once we have mastered that we move to writen notation and try to match what we have been doing without the book. When a student has progressed towards a good understanding of music notation I will encourage solo repertoire and other projects that are of interest of the students based upon a common goal we have set for our time together. My teaching style starts with really trying to understand the student that I am teaching, when I can do that, it makes the whole process of teaching easier. For example, in my experience, something that works for some students, really wont work for others, and if I can identify why something isnt working for a student, I can give them the right tools to fix it. I will usually start with asking the student to play something for me or see what they want to learn, then give them things based on what I hear in their playing, or what they tell me. Read More
