Bachelor Degree: Georgia State University

Awards:

2022 - Junior Jazz Foundation Scholarship

Overview:

My name is Trent P. I am a jazz trumpet player in the Atlanta area, I currently play very frequently around the city with some of the best jazz musicians in the area. I have been playing music since 2015, and been studying it seriously for about 5 years now. I currently attend Georgia State University finishing up my final year there getting a Bachelor's Degree in Jazz Studies, studying under Dr. Gordon Vernick. For as long as I have been studying the music, I have been performing and playing gigs. I have experience playing with commercial/wedding bands playing popular music, latin bands playing salsa/latin music, what I mainly play right now, jazz music, and many other genres.

EXPERIENCE

From 2020 - present, every summer I have been teaching at the Hilton Head Jazz Camp. This jazz camp is a week-long intensive learning experience. Jazz musicians from all over the U.S. come to teach at the camp and help the students learn about jazz. In this camp I had the responsibility of teaching theory, improvisation, sight reading, and musicality with playing. Other experience I have teaching is every so often I get hired to fill in for a teacher to teach a jazz combo at a youth jazz program in Atlanta. I also have experience teaching one on one intermittently, but I don’t have any private students currently.

METHODS USED

For teaching trumpet fundamentals, there are a handful of helpful books that I use. One of the main books I would suggest students to use is the Arban book. This book contains exercises for just about everything on the trumpet, ranging from excerpts that are challenging for beginners, and excerpts that are challenging for more experienced players too. Another book I would use is Clarke Technical Studies. This book contains a lot of exercises to help build dexterity in the fingers with playing the trumpet. A book that I use for lip slurs is the Irons book, this book contains extensive exercises for lip flexibility. I also use a lot of exercises that I either learned from other trumpet players, or ones that I made up on my own to target specific things. As far as what I use for teaching jazz, all of what I teach, I either learned through listening to jazz records, or learned from other seasoned jazz musicians. This method of learning and teaching is very traditional, and most of the best jazz musicians learned this way.

LESSON STYLE

My teaching style starts with really trying to understand the student that I am teaching, when I can do that, it makes the whole process of teaching easier. For example, in my experience, something that works for some students, really won’t work for others, and if I can identify why something isn’t working for a student, I can give them the right tools to fix it. I will usually start with asking the student to play something for me or see what they want to learn, then give them things based on what I hear in their playing, or what they tell me.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
